The One About Wellbeing
Generally life is hard right? Whether it is fast paced city life, running around after kids, dogs, cats and husbands, the stresses of starting up your business, caring for someone or losing someone you cared for. There are many factors that can cause life to become a struggle but there are small things we can do for ourselves to try and ease the stress. Self care is super important, being stressed can lead to a plethora of health problems including high blood pressure, obesity, heart disease, headaches and tiredness to name a few. Not only that, but stress, as I am sure you know, has a direct effect on your mood.
When you’re stressed, you are more likely to be anxious, restless, irritable, sad, and feel overwhelmed. So here are some things to consider if you are feeling a bit ‘over it’! It’s so important that you take time off from the hustle and bustle of life and make time to rejuvenate.
Lots of people think they “can’t” meditate, I was one, but really the simplest meditation is just sitting quietly and clearing out your thoughts. If you can sit for just 10 minutes and push out thoughts of ‘what shall i cook for dinner?’, ‘ should i buy the dress?’, ‘why was that meeting so unproductive?’ then you are making progress, getting our minds to shut up can actually be extremely challenging and it will take practise but when you get it, the benefits are well worth the time. Benefits such as:
- Being more present
- Relieving stress
- Strengthening our ability to focus
- Fills us with light and love
- Puts us in a good mood
- Helps us love ourselves and others
If you fancy giving it a go this evening then here are some little pointers to help out:
- Get super comfy. Comfy clothes, comfy position , it doesn’t have to be sitting cross-legged or laying flat on your back, you do what makes you feel good.
- Relax your body, do a quick body scan from the top of your head to your toes and actively try to relax each muscle.
- Close your eyes or dont, again, do whatever you feel comfortable with, if you do prefer to keep them open try and focus on something in front of you.
- Notice your breath, counting is good here, count 5 in, hold for 2, count 5 out, this will help to set a rhythm.
- As the thoughts keep on rolling in, gently push each one away and remain focussed on your breathing. Try to keep your brain as empty as you can. Before you know it, you’re meditating!
Do what YOU love:
When you take part in activities you enjoy, you become more productive, more engaged, and more fulfilled. So when it comes time for work on a Monday, if you have done things for yourself it doesn’t feel like such a chore, you are more focused and hopefully will have the drive and ‘ go get em’ attitude we need to refind sometimes. Try out a Sunday evening bath ritual: Light up a The Hackney Edit candle with a fragrance that helps you unwind. This could be a scent you know you like that maybe reminds you of happy times or a scent that has proven stress reducing properties like lemon or lavender. Treat yourself to a super luxurious bath oil like Rens Rose Otto Bath Oil not only will this leave your skin super nourished and lightly fragranced but will also help calm the mind. Leave the phone at the door and take in book or magazine or check out Audible for some get reads that you can just relax to whilst someone else does that reading!
My favourite! Pour yourself a glass of wine (or tea!).Hurrah - wine is good for you (not loads!) sipping a glass of wine has a calming effect on the mind without having an effect on your metabolism or precious sleep. Scientific researchers at the Washington University in St Louis, Missouri conducted a study and found many a health benefits when red wine is consumed with food in moderation (MODERATION PEOPLE!)the resveratrol in red wine directly activates a protein that promotes health and longevity. If wine isn’t your thing, try an herbal tea blend. Here is our favorite, by ZO Tea - No.05 Detox Evening Cleanse, Green Rooibos and Orange.
Laugh & Talk:
Ok, life isn’t sunshine and roses, all the time. Sometimes, you get drunk and make a fool of yourself, people let you down or you don’t have enough money and sometimes you just feel sh*t for no apparent reason and that is fine too! but if you waste your energy getting all worked up every time something goes wrong you will spend a lot of time being angry, pissed off and grumpy!
Laughter isn’t always the solution but it damn well helps so don’t take yourself too seriously. If you go into a negative situation or conversation with positivity and laughter most of the time it’s those feelings that will override the badness, not always but it helps. So does talking, we’ve been saying it for years but it really is good to talk. Pick up the phone instead of messaging, meet face to face, have a cuddle. These things won’t solve problems or eliminate stress but THEY WILL HELP!
Stress happens, but having a better understanding of how to manage stress will help you to feel more free and have more of a spring in your step in no time.
